Mango Street vs. Romeo and Juliet

There are some similarities and differences between the women in Romeo and Juliet & The House on Mango Street. Juliet is kept in with her immediate family and is forced to marry Paris because of his money and power. In The House on Mango Street the women are forced to stay in their immediate families and stay around the house with little interaction with others. The differences between the two groups are Juliet and other women in her life are grown up being told that they should grow up to be good wives and the women in The House on Mango Street grew up being told that they should stay home and cook for their families.

On Taking A Stand......

To take a stand means to be unmovable on a subject or to protect someone or something. Many groups in modern times take a stand on different things. One such group is AFSCME or American Federation of State, County, and Municipal employees. Afscme is a workers union that takes a stand for better pay for workers. They try to convince businesses to grant better pay to their workers through a process called arbitrations. In my opinion Tom Robinson does not take a stand for himself during his trial, he is quiet most of the time. Instead of being quiet he could have stood up for himself and tried to prove himself innocent. If he hadn't run and tried to climb the fence tom Robinson might have been taken from the prison and hanged by the Ewells.

Incidents Post #1

What I want to know is, why doesn't Linda Brent tell her grandmother about the abuse she received from Dr. Flint? Well it feels like Linda does want to tell her grandmother about the abuse but she fears the reprocutions."I would have given the world to have laid my head on my grandmother'ss faithful bosom, and told her all my troubles. But Dr. Flint swore he would kill me"(28). She knows if she complains she knows Dr. Flint will be mad and hurt her more. If Linda chose to talk to her grandmother I feel the reprocutions would not be as severe as Linda thinks. Dr.flint is just exagerating what he will do to her so she doesn't tell her grandmother who if told could get very angry and do something very severe. Also it is interesting that linda's mistress asked her about Linda and Dr. Flint. Linda promises to tell her the truth and the mistress protects her for a little but then totaly turns on her. "She changed her tactics. She now tried the trick of accusing my master of crime, in my presence, and gave my name as the author of the accusation"(33). Before this altercation between linda and her mistress I thought maybe Linda's mistress would be the one to help her escape but now I think she might be the one to hurt her more then Dr. Flint ever did.
